Department of Pathophysiology

Department of Pathophysiology is one of the theoretical departments of the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University. Department educational activities are focused on teaching pathophysiology and related subjects to students of master's and bachelor's degree programmes, training doctoral students in PhD programme "Physiology, Pathological Physiology, Medical Chemistry and Biochemistry", and basic and applied research.

The research of the Department focuses on various aspects of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, pathophysiological role of stress, selected solid tumours and hematologic malignancies, skin and dental diseases and it also includes the applied research in biomaterials and development of new stress measurement techniques. A well-functioning multidisciplinary cooperation has been established with clinical departments, other MUNI faculties and universities in the Czech Republic and abroad, and the Czech Academy of Sciences.

We teach pathophysiology courses for students of master's degree programmes in General Medicine and Dentistry, to students of bachelor's degree programmes of non-medical healthcare professions, and we also cooperatively participate in the teaching activities for other MUNI faculties and other universities (e.g. Brno University of Technology).

Pathophysiology is a medical discipline dealing with the causes and mechanisms of diseases. Today's medicine relies heavily on detailed knowledge of the molecular basis of etiopathogenic processes responsible for subsequent clinical manifestations of diseases, and biomedical research continuously broadens this knowledge and translates the findings to diagnostics, treatment, and prevention. Therefore, the field of pathophysiology integrates many medical specializations and necessarily attracts a broad array of professionals incl. medical doctors, scientists, pharmacists and technical disciplines. We believe that the Department of Pathophysiology is an inspiring place and intellectual platform for meeting of experts and students of various fields of study stimulating their mutual enrichment.
